Cambremer
Cambremer is a small town approximately 20 miles east of Caen, south of
Deauville, 2 miles north of the RN13. It is 40 minutes' drive from the
ferry ports of Le Havre or Caen. Cambremer has approx. 1200 inhabitants,
but is more important than it may seem since it is the 'head of the
canton'. Consequently it boasts a good selection of shops (boulangerie is
150 yards/metres from the house), bank, pharmacy, 2 restaurants, bar,
garage and a post office. There is no through traffic through the town.
On the edge of town there is a traditional Calvados (apple brandy)
distillery which you can visit, with tours in English. Cambremer is also
at the heart of the 'Cider Route', with visits to farms where you can see
(and taste!) cider being made the traditional way. The tourist information
office can give you details of these as well as organised visits to the
many stud farms, chateaux and churches in the nearby villages and
surrounding countryside. It is also good walking country - a map at the
house shows circuits of 'green' and country lanes starting 50 yards/metres
from the front door.
Market day is Friday, with special Sunday markets during July and August.
